LeBron James scored 20 points and hit the go-ahead bucket as Philadelphia beat the champion Knicks for the second time this season, 98-93.

What happened in Philadelphia

Tyrese Maxey scored 27 points on 10-for-19 shooting and LeBron James added 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the New York Knicks 98-93 in an NBA Cup group game on Friday night.

The Sixers, now 5-1, also beat New York on opening night in James' Philadelphia debut. Jalen Brunson scored 24 points with six assists, and Karl-Anthony Towns posted 22 points and 12 boards for the Knicks, who fell to 2-4.

A close finish with late heroics

With 1:32 left, Brunson hit a 3-pointer for a 90-89 Knicks lead. James answered with the go-ahead fadeaway jumper with 1:10 remaining, and V.J.

Edgecombe buried an insurance 3-pointer. James sealed it with a tip-in after Maxey's miss, capping what CBS News described as perhaps his best game yet as a Sixer.

Anfernee Simons scored 21 points off the bench, hitting three triples in the third quarter.

Why it matters

The Sixers are 2-0 against the reigning NBA Cup and NBA champion Knicks despite their regular starting five starting together only three times this season. Jaylen Brown missed his first game with left knee soreness, per NBC Sports Philadelphia, leaving Maxey as the lone Sixer to start every game.

Knicks fans were sparse compared to last season's playoff series, and MVP chants for Brunson were drowned out by Philly boos.

What comes next

The Knicks host Brooklyn on Monday, while the Sixers travel to Charlotte to play the Hornets on Saturday night in the second game of a back-to-back. Philadelphia's next NBA Cup game is next Friday against the Cavaliers.

The Sixers did not say whether Brown is expected to miss more games, and Brunson appeared to roll an ankle late in the loss.
