President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, called Twitch streamer and YouTube personality Hasan Piker a "terrible liability" for Democrats and said "he's a communist. There's no question about it." Trump added that he thinks Piker's "statements are so bad." The comments came as Piker, who has described himself as a socialist, draws renewed attention for remarks about U.S. foreign policy and his ties to Democratic candidates.

It is unusual for a sitting president to single out a Twitch streamer from the podium, and the attack effectively frames one creator as holding real power over a major political party. Trump told reporters Piker "has got a power over some of these Democrats," a striking claim about a creator whose audience is online rather than institutional. For the Creators & Podcasts niche, the surprise is that a streamer's commentary has become a national political flashpoint with GOP-aligned groups, per Axios as cited in the pack, spending millions on advertisements tying him to a Senate candidate.

On "The Axios Show," taped in Los Angeles, interviewer Alex Thompson asked Piker about his earlier statement that "America is the top dog in terrorism." Piker replied, "Pound for pound, as far as the number of deaths, yes," saying the U.S. has "caused tremendous terror all around the world." He cited a strike on a school in Minab, Iran, referencing a United Nations fact-finding mission that it reported found "reasonable grounds to believe" the U.S. carried out an indiscriminate attack. Piker later conceded not all Americans are terrorists and called for an "environment of accountability." Per Fox News, he said, "If you're killing 140 schoolgirls, that is an act of terror."

The most immediate political consequence is in Michigan, where Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who has appeared with Piker, distanced himself. His campaign said in a statement to Axios and Fox News Digital, "I do not agree with this statement [on al-Qaeda], nor do I give much weight to the statements made by a social media streamer." Republicans have highlighted the association in Michigan's competitive Senate race, with GOP-aligned groups spending millions on ads linking the two, according to Axios as cited by KATV.

Rather than retreating, Piker told "The Axios Show" he would "absolutely" campaign for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she runs for president in 2028, said he has been in touch with Sen. Bernie Sanders, and described his role bluntly: "My job is to get under-45-year-old, college-educated and non-college-educated men to come out and participate." Media commentator Kaivan Shroff told Fox News Digital the central tension is that Piker "wants his electoral influence taken seriously" while treating his rhetoric's consequences as the candidates' problem: "You can't claim credit for helping politicians win and then treat the consequences of your own rhetoric as their problem."

The fight is now a live test of creator political power heading into the midterms. Piker says no one has asked him to stay away from — or go to — Michigan, but acknowledged that if El-Sayed called on him this close to the election, "there'd be real deep problems." Trump used the moment to also question why Jewish and Black Americans vote Democratic, saying it is "not possible" in "a world of rationality." With the midweeks still unfolding, the outstanding question is whether streamer surrogacy becomes an asset for reaching young men or a liability candidates must keep disavowing.
