Netflix says 'Blue Eye Samurai' Season 2 arrives January 19, 2027 with six episodes, taking Mizu's revenge quest from Japan to 17th-century London.
Netflix Dates Season 2 After a Three-Year Wait
Netflix has released a date announcement trailer confirming that its Emmy-winning animated series 'Blue Eye Samurai' returns globally on January 19, 2027, with a six-episode run.
Hypebeast reports the teaser doubles as a visceral recap of Mizu's violent journey, flashing brutal sword clashes, intense standoffs and the fiery destruction she left in her wake.
The timing is pointed: Season 1 debuted on November 3, 2023, and Comic Book Resources notes the announcement arrived exactly three years to the day after that premiere, closing out a wait fans have felt keenly because animation is a lengthy process.
Why London Changes Everything for Mizu
The surprise is geographic: Mizu, the mixed-race swordmaster voiced by Maya Erskine, leaves Edo-period Japan entirely, sailing for London to hunt the two remaining men who could be her father.
Series creators Amber Noizumi and Michael Green tell Comic Book Resources that London in 1657 had a thriving culture of illicit activity paralleling their Japan story, a puritanical society that persecuted women as witches, closed bars and theaters, and even outlawed Christmas.
They add that for the first time Mizu must confront standing out as Asian in a sea of white faces, and learn what it means to be a woman in one of the most oppressive times in English history.
The Trailer Sets a Darker Tone

The date announcement trailer is itself the story's centerpiece: Hypebeast describes striking footage in the series' gorgeous, stylized 3D animation that sets a dark, atmospheric tone for the next chapter.
Bubbleblabber frames the season as picking up immediately after the explosive events of the first season finale, with Mizu arriving in 17th-century England to face new allies, old enemies and her own inner demons while pressing her revenge list.
For a series that won four Primetime Emmy Awards and six Annie Awards for its first run, per Anime Trending, the trailer is the first real look at whether the move abroad can sustain that acclaim.
Returning Voices and New Cast Additions
Maya Erskine returns as Mizu, with Brenda Song, Darren Barnet and Masi Oka reprising Akemi, Taigen and Ringo, according to Hypebeast. The ensemble expands with Jonathan Pryce as Old Violet, Joel Kim Booster as Priest Ando and Sherry Cola as Kuma.
The story also splits its geography: Anime Trending relays Netflix's description that in Japan, Akemi and Taigen navigate Edo Castle under a dangerous new Shogun while Ringo searches for new purpose.
Behind the scenes, Noizumi and Green executive produce alongside Erwin Stoff, with Jane Wu as supervising director and Blue Spirit handling animation.
The Stakes: Renewed Early, Ending on Purpose
The long gap is real — Season 1 scored 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and was renewed a month after debut, yet Season 2 arrives more than three years later, Comic Book Resources reports.
The payoff is that the streamer gave the series an early renewal for a third and final season, planned for 2028, just one year after Season 2, which CBR argues should make the next wait less painful. Hypebeast likewise reports the new season took three years to make and will not be the last.
For devoted fans, the message is that the story now has a planned endpoint rather than an open-ended commission.
What Comes Next for Fans Waiting
Between now and the January 19, 2027 premiere, fans have Season 1 streaming on Netflix for a refresher, and Comic Book Resources notes the story is also expanding beyond the screen with a comic book prequel.
Noizumi and Green thanked viewers for their patience in remarks quoted by CBR, saying the team's brushstroke-by-brushstroke crafting of Edo Japan and 17th-century London is 'nothing short of a miracle' to them.
With a date locked, a trailer out and the finale roadmap set, the niche conversation now shifts from when Mizu returns to how her London chapter plays out.
