OutKick at Fox News reports NBC's record WNBA Finals ratings claims combine TV and streaming and sidestep measurement changes.

The record claims raised eyebrows

Fox News reports that USA Sports announced Game 6 of the WNBA Finals averaged 1.5 million viewers across USA Network, E! and SYFY with Peacock-led streaming — a Thursday afternoon game that OutKick says outdrew last year's primetime championship clincher by 4%, a figure the outlet found surprising given the 12:30 p.m.

ET tipoff and 9:30 a.m. start in the Valkyries' Bay Area market. Fox News notes NBC also called its 2.1 million Game 1 audience the largest Finals opener ever, and touted Game 3's 1.71 million as the biggest Game 3 since 1999 and the highest ever on cable.

All of those figures, according to Fox News, combine television and streaming without breaking out how much came from each.

Why the comparison is contested

The core of Fox News' critique is that the head-to-head comparisons are not like-for-like.

Citing Sports Media Watch, Fox News reports NBC's Game 4 television audience was 1.66 million — slightly below the 1.67 million ESPN record set by the 2024 Liberty-Lynx Game 4 — with another 232,000 viewers measured separately by Adobe Analytics pushing the combined figure over the old mark.

Fox News also points out ESPN required paid access while NBC is free over the air.

On measurement, Fox News notes Nielsen's Big Data + Panel standard took effect in 2025, expanded out-of-home coverage from 66% to 100% of the contiguous U.S., and added wearable-based co-viewing detection in August, so the 2024 ESPN baseline predates the new system.

The Game 5 gap and the Nielsen policy question

Fox News highlights that USA Sports promoted Game 5's 1.4 million viewers as the second-most-watched Finals Game 5 ever, while omitting that the 2024 Liberty-Lynx Game 5 — a winner-take-all clincher — drew 2.15 million on ESPN, roughly 35% higher; Monday's game also faced Cowboys-Eagles 'Monday Night Football' at 18.8 million and the World Series at 8.3 million.

Fox News further reports that Michael Mulvihill, Fox's president of insights and analytics, posted on X that Nielsen told clients mixing internal or third-party data with Nielsen metrics in comparative press statements 'is not permissible.'

According to Fox News, USA Sports cited panel-only Nielsen data for Game 6 after using Big Data + Panel for earlier games, without labeling the figure preliminary.

The scheduling mess behind the numbers

ESPN adds the logistical backdrop: the Dream said in an open letter to Atlanta that concerns about Finals venue availability went unheeded, and that moving Game 6 to 12:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Arena was 'not what we fought for.'

ESPN reports the Dream's regular home, Gateway Center, seats just 3,500, forcing all three Atlanta Finals games onto the Hawks' 17,000-seat arena with hurried NBA schedule adjustments, and that the organization raised potential playoff conflicts with NBA dates two months earlier without what it called due urgency.

Valkyries players Kiah Stokes and Veronica Burton urged Bay Area fans to call in sick for the 9:30 a.m. local tipoff, while Dream players, per ESPN, brushed the time aside: 'It's the Finals,' Allisha Gray said.
