Macro Buys AllBlk From AMC in First Streaming Move

Charles D. King's Macro has acquired the Black-focused streamer AllBlk from AMC Global Media, its first direct-to-consumer platform, with terms undisclosed.

What Happened

Charles D. It is Macro's first move into direct-to-consumer streaming, giving the company a platform where subscribers pay it directly. Financial terms were not disclosed. King led the acquisition alongside Macro executive VP of strategy and operations Bobby Singh and CFO Jaime Rigal, with Lazard and Lydian Strategy advising and Paul Hastings LLP as legal counsel, according to Variety and Blex Media.

Why It Is Surprising

The purchase runs against a consolidating streaming market. Baller Alert reports that niche audience services have been folded into bigger platforms or shut down over the past three years, so buying one is a bet that a smaller platform with a defined audience beats being a slot inside a giant library. The deal also returns a Black-focused platform to Black ownership after eight years under AMC, which acquired it in 2018 through the purchase of founder Robert L. Johnson's RLJ Entertainment. King says the moment of industry disruption is precisely the opportunity.

The Evidence

AllBlk launched in 2014 as UMC (Urban Movie Classics), created by BET founder Robert L. Johnson, which The Hollywood Reporter describes as the first streaming service built specifically for Black television and movies. Its library includes originals such as G.R.I.T.S., D.O.P.E. Unit, Jupiter Jones and Wild Rose, plus indie films, Black cinema classics, We TV originals and stage plays. Deadline reports the $7-a-month service's subscriber count has not been reported recently, though AMC's broader niche streaming portfolio stood at 10.4 million subscribers at the end of 2025, flat with 2024.

The Stakes

Baller Alert frames the strategic logic: until now Macro sold its films and shows to others — Judas and the Black Messiah to Warner Bros., Government Cheese to Apple TV, Gentefied to Netflix — and the buyer owned the audience relationship and subscriber data. Owning AllBlk gives Macro a distribution channel for stories it already produces, including upcoming titles Josephine and If I Go Will They Miss Me. Macro also plans investment in original programming, creative collaboration across its studios, and audience development and community engagement, per Variety and Blex Media.

AMC Stays Involved

AMC is not severing ties. AMC Global Media CEO Kristin Dolan said AllBlk has had a fantastic year and called Macro a strategic partner in which AMC has been an investor for nearly a decade. She said AMC will continue to be involved as an investor and through a new content licensing agreement between the companies, meaning AMC keeps supplying shows and films to the platform rather than pulling its library at closing. Baller Alert notes that for current subscribers, the transition is designed to be seamless, with the platform remaining independent and its existing slate and library intact.

What Comes Next

Macro says it will integrate the streamer into its studio operations and push new original programming, aiming to deepen the platform's relationship with its core viewers and strengthen long-term value, according to the announcement quoted by Deadline and Variety. The company, founded in 2015 to represent Black, Indigenous and people-of-color storytellers, now runs production, management, brand, venture capital and distribution under one roof. Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP represented AMC Global Media in the deal, per Variety. Whether a focused standalone streamer can thrive amid consolidation will be the test to watch.
