Fox News calls Georgia's Halloween demolition of Florida a demolition in which the Gators' marching band stole the show.
A Halloween Horror Show in Atlanta
Georgia beat Florida 27-8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Oct. 31, leading 24-0 at halftime and doing, as Fox News' Trey Wallace put it, 'very little in the second half.'
The game was moved to Atlanta for the first time because of a $1.4 billion renovation of EverBank Stadium, per ESPN, and the No. 3 Bulldogs forced four turnovers, held Florida to 54 rushing yards, and recorded four sacks. Coach Kirby Smart told ESPN, 'The Dogs didn't beat the Dogs today.
They helped us with some of the turnovers they had.'
The Band Was the Best Act in Town
Here's where the comedy writes itself: Fox News reports that as Florida fans streamed toward the exits, the Gators' marching band took the field and 'provided the most entertaining part of the afternoon' for anyone still rooting for Florida.
Wallace dubbed the Atlanta venue 'Sanford West' at this point, and ESPN notes Georgia has now won six straight over Florida — its most dominant run in the rivalry since 1978-83. When the highlight of your biggest rivalry game is your own band, that's not a football report, that's a punchline.
The Evidence: One Underhand Disaster
The game's signature bit, per ESPN: Florida quarterback Aaron Philo, falling to the turf, 'inexplicably threw a wild underhand pass' that Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson IV intercepted.
Later, Florida's Tramell Jones Jr. lost a fumble that linebacker Chris Cole scooped and returned 66 yards for a touchdown — ESPN says linebacker Quintavius Johnson's sack knocked the ball loose.
Fox News notes Gunner Stockton had thrown for only 59 yards by the 1:19 mark of the third quarter, and Georgia still led 24-0. Florida's NCAA-record 481-game scoring streak survived only on a late two-yard run.
Auburn Woke a Monster, Fox News Says
According to Fox News' Wallace, the real story is that Auburn's upset of Georgia two weeks ago 'awoke a monster in Athens,' and Florida simply paid the price in what he called a 'cocktail beatdown.'
Wallace argues Kirby Smart 'made sure to send a defensive message' to doubters after the loss, and even suggested Smart should send Auburn coach Alex Golesh 'a fruit basket' for the wake-up call.
Fly War Eagle notes Georgia limited Florida to 252 total yards after Byrum Brown had gashed the Dawgs for 115 rushing yards in the Auburn loss.
Stakes and What Comes Next
ESPN reports Georgia ran for 217 yards and went 4-for-5 in the red zone, and coach Jon Sumrall conceded, 'They didn't need our help tonight, but we gave it to them, too.'
Fox News argues Georgia could lose two more games and still make the College Football Playoff, with a primetime trip to Ole Miss next week and, per Wallace, a possible gauntlet-ender at South Carolina on Nov. 21.
Meanwhile ESPN says the series heads to Tampa's Raymond James Stadium in 2027 before returning to Jacksonville in 2028 — the rivalry's next venue change, and presumably its next punchline.
