Donald Glover will write, direct, executive-produce and star in a live-action PUBG series for Netflix, co-writing with brother Stephen.

The Battle Royale Is Coming to Netflix

Donald Glover is attached to write, direct, executive-produce, and star in the adaptation, while his brother and longtime collaborator Stephen Glover joins as co-writer and executive producer.

The project remains in development, with no plot details, additional casting, script status, or release window announced, and IGN reports no premiere date has been set for regions like the UAE, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt, though Netflix operates in those markets.

Rounding out the executive producer list are Michael Schaefer for NEON TV, Fam Udeorji for Gilga, and Taeseok Jang and Sujin Lee for Krafton's entertainment arm LV3H, which is involved in development and production.

Why Glover Fits a Game With No Story

The hardest part of adapting PUBG is that the game offers little in the way of narrative. The Mary Sue notes that PUBG has essentially no lore — no hero's journey, just chaos, loot, and a shrinking circle — making it a blank canvas that could sink a lesser creative team.

The Mary Sue speculates the result could be a survival thriller, a satire of gamer culture, or something stranger still.

The Surprisingly Deep PUBG Lore

IGN counters the 'game with no story' framing by pointing to an official narrative on PUBG's website.

According to IGN, the Battlegrounds were the brainchild of a billionaire named Sergei Kalimnik, the lone survivor of a 1965 Soviet attack on the fictional island of Erangel, who later bought the island and recreated his trauma by forcing 100 people to fight until one remains.

IGN also likens the setup to Squid Game, with shadowy elites watching the experiments, and ties it to a centuries-old tradition called Magna Venari: The Great Hunt, which asked why some survive when others do not.

Female First adds that the game has earned seven Guinness World Records and that it remains unclear how the Glover siblings will translate its survival gameplay into a TV storyline.

Netflix's Live-Action Gamble, One Step Closer

The PUBG news lands as Netflix's biggest live-action video game swing moves toward the finish line.

The Direct reports that Ubisoft confirmed in its Fall 2026 blog post that the Assassin's Creed series it is producing with Netflix is nearing completion of filming in Rome, Italy, where Ubisoft's head of content Jean Guesdon visited the set and consulted on scripts.

The series tells an original story set in 64 AD during Emperor Nero's reign and the Great Fire of Rome, starring Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, and Laura Marcus, with Noomi Rapace and Sean Harris in recurring roles.

The Direct notes no release date has been communicated, while The Mary Sue flags that live action has been trickier for Netflix than animation after the 2022 Resident Evil series was canceled after one season.

One Teaser, Two Streaming Rivals

Kojima Productions also dropped the first teaser for Death Stranding Isolations, an anime adaptation of Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding games coming to Disney+ in 2027, Yahoo reports.

The teaser, released Thursday, opens with a blond girl waking from a nightmare in which a monstrous pool of tar swallows her, and the series is set in a fractured North America after Sam Bridges reunited the continent using the Chiral Network.

The official synopsis, as relayed by Yahoo, follows people who take a different path than Sam and Bridges, including a girl who cuts all ties with the outside world in a land stalked by ghostly BTs and timefall rain that accelerates aging.

Together with PUBG and Assassin's Creed, the teaser shows streamers doubling down on big-name game IP across both live action and animation.

What Comes Next

The PUBG series is in early development with scripts still to be written — The Mary Sue suggests viewers should not expect it on screen before 2028 at the earliest — and Female First confirms that a release date and further casting details have yet to be announced.

An earlier animated PUBG project with Castlevania executive producer Adi Shankar, announced for Netflix in 2021, has gone quiet and is not mentioned in the new announcement, according to Bleeding Cool and Female First.

Krafton has been exploring film and television expansion for years, and this live-action series is its clearest step yet. Netflix's slate also includes a Gears of War film, animated Minecraft and Magic: The Gathering projects, and an Overcooked competition series in development, per Female First.
