OpenAI is acquiring Pierre, whose open-source Trees, Diffs and Code Storage tools power Codex, to rebuild Git workflows for coding agents.

OpenAI moves to buy Pierre

OpenAI will acquire Pierre Computer Company, the developer of open-source coding tools, to expand its Codex platform's capabilities in building, understanding and reviewing software.

The deal brings Pierre's team and technology into OpenAI's developer ecosystem, building on tools already used inside the Codex application.

OpenAI said the acquisition will help it improve the Git-based workflows developers rely on and adapt them for teams increasingly working alongside coding agents.

"We want to make Codex the place where developers and agents take on their most ambitious projects," the company said in its announcement.

The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and the two companies continue operating as separate, independent businesses until closing.

Why Codex already depends on Pierre

The surprising part is that OpenAI is buying tools its own product already uses.

The Cryptonomist reports that Pierre's Trees and Diffs libraries are already integrated into the Codex app: Trees supports browsing a project's files, while Diffs shows changes to code, helping developers navigate and review large amounts of code while maintaining performance.

Diffs includes an Edit mode that lets reviewers correct a line of code directly where they spot a problem, and Highlights offers syntax highlighting that refreshes live as a developer types or as an agent streams generated code.

Pierre also built Code Storage, a service whose API lets applications store code and track its history with Git, and OpenAI says existing customers can keep using it after closing while those features are brought into Codex.

Evolving Git for parallel agents

OpenAI's stated engineering rationale is that systems built around Git need to evolve as more software development is carried out in parallel by AI agents rather than individual humans.

The Economic Times notes that earlier this week OpenAI also outlined Pando, an in-house source control backend developed for its engineers and AI agents to scale Git.

Following the acquisition, OpenAI aims to bring together the tools used across different stages of software development, from creating a new branch to deploying code, and says the broader ambition is to connect the code a company releases with the decisions its teams make.

A notable commitment: Pierre's open-source projects will remain open-source, and OpenAI says it will continue contributing to them.

What comes next

Until then, Code Storage customers can continue using the service as OpenAI works to fold its capabilities into Codex.

The acquisition fits a broader push: The Economic Times reports that in October OpenAI acquired drug development platform Orchestra Bio and partnered with cybersecurity research firm Cathedral to identify vulnerabilities with external security experts and advanced AI models.

For developers, the open question is how deeply Pierre's file navigation, review and code-history tooling will be merged into Codex, and whether agent-era forks of Git workflows will remain compatible with the open-source projects the community already uses.
