After AI-built rivals copied years of work, addon developer plusmouse locked his GitHub repos and Warcraft Logs is reworking its free API.
One New WoW Analysis Company Per Day
Warcraft Logs, the archon.gg-operated combat-tracking service whose free API lets developers build tools around players' uploaded fight data, is seeing a flood of AI-assisted projects.
CEO Sildri Silentcrest says hobbyists once made up most API users, but the service is now averaging at least one commercial ask per day — and he suspects more are commercializing without approval.
The pressure comes from what developers call "vibe-coded" projects, software built with AI assistance, which 404 Media reports have proliferated across World of Warcraft subreddits, where some creators acknowledge using AI only after users ask.
Plusmouse Makes Its Repos Private
Veteran addon creator plusmouse says AI-generated competitors have copied their work, including a distinctive design for the nameplates displayed above enemies.
In some cases the code similarity was close enough to trigger copyright takedowns; in others the clones were just different enough to survive, despite feeling like plusmouse's own solution.
"Borrowing ideas is normal in addon development, but doing it on the scale that AI permits isn't," plusmouse said. In response, plusmouse has made some GitHub repositories private, believing the change has stopped large language models from ingesting the code.
Why the Ratio Turned Ugly
The math behind the crisis is what makes it a genuine developer-culture story. Silentcrest put it starkly: two years ago maybe 200 developers used the API with two to four being abusive; today 10,000 use it and roughly 1,000 are abusive.
"Is it that Claude doesn't read the ToS? Or is it that the new developers don't care as much as the old?" he asked, noting that policing API use has become a struggle even as the team loves tools that coding accessibility has enabled.
Warcraft Logs itself uses AI for research and code review, per The Cool Down.
Paid Keys and a Narrower API
Warcraft Logs is responding on two fronts.
Silentcrest says the API will be reshaped to prioritize tools that genuinely help players understand their fights — like identifying why a boss-fight death happened or suggesting improvements for the next attempt — because projects that scrape large amounts of data to display basic statistics have become far more common.
The service is also introducing a paid commercial key so that developers with commercial ambitions can support the foundation underlying the projects.
For a community long funded by Patreon support and CurseForge ad revenue, per 404 Media's reporting cited by The Cool Down, the era of an entirely free, open API appears to be ending.
