HBO Wins Bidding War for Bardem's 'The Spread'
By @sharedot · · 8 pages
Deadline reports HBO beat Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV with a rare straight-to-series order for Javier Bardem's Miami finance drama 'The Spread.'
What happened: HBO lands a star package
Deadline reports exclusively that HBO has given a straight-to-series order to 'The Spread,' a drama headlined and executive produced by Oscar winner Javier Bardem, after a bidding war with all the major streamers. The project hails from 'Ozark' co-creator Bill Dubuque, Sean Sansiveri and Fifth Season, with Matthew Vaughn ('Kingsman') set to direct. TheWrap, The Hollywood Reporter and Media Play News all confirmed the order, with the series described as a co-production with Fifth Season TV Studio.
Why the bidding war was unusual
According to Deadline, the fall TV selling season got off to a hot start because the package triggered frenzied bidding even though Fifth Season took it out in August, typically considered a dead period when many executives are on vacation. Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV all came in strong with offers including writers rooms and straight-to-series orders, and bids escalated as the process went on — Deadline hears one bid involved a potential two-season pickup. HBO, which rarely commits to a series greenlight off a pitch, matched the straight-to-series offers to win.
The evidence: Wall Street South
All outlets describe the same premise: Miami turning paradise into power — 'Wall Street South' — a subtropical collision of industry titans, elite hedge funds, staggering wealth and ruthless competition. Bardem plays a visionary billionaire who collects the brilliant, the hungry and the dangerous, then turns their ambitions loose on the markets that power America, chasing the power to shift the economic center of gravity to Miami. HBO's Francesca Orsi said the network had 'long wanted to set a scripted series in Florida' and is excited to explore the 'gilded chaos' of Miami.
The stakes: filling an Industry-sized hole
The Hollywood Reporter notes the timing: with 'Industry' heading into its final season, HBO is adding another show centered on big money, and 'The Spread' gives the network a flagship finance drama with an A-list cast and director attached before any premiere date exists. Seat42F notes that no production start, episode count, release window or even the name of Bardem's character has been announced — the project sold purely on its creative team.
A rare pitch-based greenlight
Deadline reports HBO rarely commits to a series based off a pitch, making the straight-to-series order a notable vote of confidence in the Dubuque-Sansiveri script-free package. The outlet also notes the aggressive bidders included Paramount+ (led by Cindy Holland) and Prime Video (led by Peter Friedlander), both run by former Netflix executives who had worked with Dubuque on 'Ozark.' The sale marks the first big one for Fifth Season since Peter Traugott became President of Television earlier this year, per Deadline.
What comes next for 'The Spread'
Bardem, a four-time Oscar nominee and winner for 'No Country for Old Men,' recently starred in Apple TV's 'Cape Fear' and Netflix's 'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,' and The Hollywood Reporter notes he will next appear in 'Dune: Part Three' and 'Bunker,' both due in December.
