Netflix has cast John Goodman as Aggie's father Jack in The Beast in Me Season 2, a series once billed as a limited-run thriller.

The casting reveal

Netflix's Tudum site announced that The Beast in Me will return for Season 2, with Claire Danes reprising her role as writer Aggie Wiggs and Emmy winner John Goodman joining as her father, Jack. Deadline reports Goodman will play Aggie's dad, believed to be a long-time con artist.

Howard Gordon returns as writer and co-showrunner alongside Daniel Pearle, and Tudum quotes Gordon saying the team "only" committed to a second season once they "found a story that was worthy of the first."

Netflix's head of Scripted Series, Jinny Howe, told Tudum the streamer is "thrilled" to welcome Gordon via a new exclusive creative partnership.

Why it is a reversal

The surprise is that the show is coming back at all. Variety notes The Beast in Me was originally picked up in 2024 as a limited series and even campaigned as one at this year's Emmy race.

But in the tradition of Big Little Lies and other "limited" shows before it, Variety reports that Netflix and the producers began exploring a second season and opened a writers' room earlier this year.

The evidence: a Season 1 juggernaut

Netflix's own Tudum article lays out why the streamer wants more. Season 1 debuted at No. 1 on Netflix's Global Top 10, reached the top 10 in 88 countries, and drew 43 million views in just seven weeks.

At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, the season earned 21 nominations, with Matthew Rhys winning Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series in what Tudum calls a history-making night for the three-time winner, while composers Sean Callery and Sara Barone took a Creative Arts Emmy for the score.

Tudum adds that Season 1 is streaming on Netflix now.

Who is John Goodman playing?

The father role was foreshadowed long before the casting. Yahoo Entertainment points out that Howard Gordon told The Wrap he was "tempted by the character of her grifter father" when discussing a possible follow-up.

Deadline identifies the character as Aggie's dad, believed to be a longtime con artist, while Variety names him Jack and calls Goodman an 11-time Emmy nominee who won in 2007 for Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Exact plot details for Season 2 remain under wraps, per both Deadline and Variety.

The team behind Season 2

The returning roster reads like a reunion. Tudum and Variety list executive producers including Danes, Gordon, Pearle, series creator Gabe Rotter, Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Conan O'Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, and Jodie Foster, with 20th Television as the studio.

Gordon's statement thanks Netflix's Jinny Howe and 20th Television's Karey Burke for "giving us the chance to get the band back together." Howe's statement also credits Howard Gordon, Gabe Rotter, and the entire cast and crew, per Tudum.

What comes next

Fans will have to wait for specifics. Yahoo notes the story of the grifter father is exactly the thread Gordon flagged before the renewal, suggesting Goodman's Jack could anchor the new arc.

For viewers catching up, all eight Season 1 episodes are available on Netflix now, per Tudum. Until Netflix reveals plot details, the question fans will debate is whether a con-artist father can be as compelling a nemesis as Nile Jarvis was.
