Mandalorian and Grogu Novelization Reportedly Cancelled
By @sharedot · · 6 pages
The junior novelization of 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' appears cancelled, which would end a 50-year novelization streak.
What Happened
The planned deluxe junior novelization of *Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu* has reportedly been cancelled. According to WDW News Today, a publishing catalog entry shared on the Star Wars Books subreddit shows the book's status listed outright as "CANCELLED." The title, a 144-page hardcover retelling intended for readers ages 6–9, was originally scheduled for November 17, 2026, before its publication date shifted repeatedly — listings showed September 7, 2027 and February 23, 2027 before the apparent axe fell. The $12.99 edition was set to include 16 pages of full-color images and a poster.
A First in 50 Years of Star Wars Print
If the cancellation stands, WDW News Today notes this would be the first theatrically released Star Wars film without an official prose adaptation. Every prior movie — the nine Skywalker Saga installments, *Rogue One*, *Solo*, and even the animated *The Clone Wars* — received both adult and junior novelizations. The tradition dates to 1976, when Alan Dean Foster adapted George Lucas's screenplay while the original film was still in production; the novel famously hit shelves before the movie itself, giving Star Wars a print history longer than its film series.
The Evidence
Several signals point toward abandonment, per WDW News Today. The title's dedicated Penguin Random House webpage has become unavailable, and the hardcover's Amazon listing is no longer purchasable — reportedly displaying a placeholder release date of January 2, 2079. Audiobook listings, however, remained accessible through Amazon and Audible as of publication. Notably, no individual author was ever announced; listings credited Random House itself as writer and illustrator. Neither Disney, Lucasfilm, nor Random House has formally confirmed the cancellation.
Stakes and What Comes Next
The film, directed by Jon Favreau and released May 22, 2026, continued Din Djarin and Grogu's story on a New Republic mission and is now on Disney+ and home media. ScreenRant reports the movie underperformed at the box office, making the publishing retreat another marker in a shaky stretch — though 2027 brings *Starfighter*, *Ahsoka* season two, and a Dungeons & Dragons crossover called Season of Rebellion in late 2027. Fans of the franchise's print tradition will be watching whether any prose version of the film ever emerges.
