Emily Osment requested an intimacy coordinator for Young Sheldon kissing scenes because co-star Montana Jordan was 18 and she felt uncomfortable.
What happened on set
Emily Osment has revealed that she requested an intimacy coordinator while filming kissing scenes with Montana Jordan on 'Young Sheldon,' telling Jessica Radloff's new book 'Young Sheldon: The (Juicier-Than-Meemaw's-Brisket) Inside Story of the Hit Comedy' that the actors' roughly 12-year age gap made her uncomfortable.
Osment was about 30 when she joined the CBS comedy in season five as Mandy McAllister, while Jordan, who played Georgie Cooper, was just 18. The couple's onscreen romance continued into the spin-off 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage.'
'He was a baby with a mullet'
'That made me uncomfortable. He was a baby!
A baby with a mullet,' Osment said in the book, according to Variety and Page Six. She said she spoke to producer Tim Marx, and although a coordinator could not be arranged that late in the day, one was present for the next few episodes as the characters' relationship escalated.
'It made everything easier having one there. I think it's something that's really important,' she said.
Osment added she did not know whether Jordan knew he could ask for one himself, saying, 'Like, let's give him the option, too. Make him comfortable.'
Production admits it dropped the ball
Director Alex Reid acknowledged in the book that the production 'totally dropped the ball' by not initially having an intimacy coordinator present, because the family sitcom had no sex scenes and the need was overlooked.
Reid recalled a between-takes photo of Osment and Jordan sitting in a car looking in opposite directions, which Osment said showed how uncomfortable both were shooting intimacy with someone they had just met.
Co-creator Steve Molaro said Osment had 'every right to ask,' and Variety reports she was eventually comfortable without one.
Why it is surprising
The revelation cuts against the assumption that intimacy coordinators are only needed for explicit content.
'Young Sheldon' was a family-friendly CBS comedy with no sex scenes, yet its most uncomfortable set pieces were ordinary kissing scenes between actors who barely knew each other and differed in age by about a decade.
The story is also notable because Osment advocated not just for herself but for her 18-year-old co-star, worrying that Jordan — whom she called 'such a sweet kid' — would 'just eat his discomfort' rather than speak up.
The stakes for the industry
IBTimes notes Osment's experience highlights the importance of clear communication when filming scenes involving physical intimacy, and that performers should be able to raise concerns whatever the show.
It also shows a young actor's comfort being considered alongside a veteran's, and a network production publicly conceding an early lapse.
What comes next
The disclosures come from Jessica Radloff's book, which explores the sitcom's production and cast experiences, including the network's initial concerns about a storyline with such a significant age gap.
Osment became a series regular in season six and stayed until the show ended in 2024, and she and Jordan now lead the spin-off 'Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage,' currently in its third season.
The wide pickup across outlets — Variety, Page Six, TheWrap, UNILAD and IBTimes — suggests the conversation about on-set intimacy practices will keep running alongside the book's release.
