Apple Unveils $1,999 iPhone Duo, Its First Foldable

At John Ternus's debut keynote, Apple revealed the iPhone Duo foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display, A20 Pro chip and October 23 launch.

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo at its 'Surprise and Shine' event in Cupertino, its first foldable iPhone. Opened, it offers a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display with a nano-texture, glare-reducing finish; closed, a 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. It is powered by the A20 Pro chip with a vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture, runs iOS 27, and is crafted from polished grade 5 titanium in star white and night sky. Pre-orders begin October 16, with availability October 23 at $1,999.

CEO John Ternus called the device 'the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,' in his first keynote since replacing Tim Cook as CEO on September 1. The foldable enters a market long dominated by Samsung and Chinese makers such as Huawei, and CNBC notes it is the biggest change to iPhone design and release strategy in years. Apple is betting that design, privacy-focused on-device AI and ecosystem integration can turn foldables from a niche into a mainstream category.

The precision hinge uses more than 100 components to support the center of the display and close securely with an integrated magnet array. Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display offers 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, the phone carries an IP68 rating, and a custom polymer cover layer is said to be up to 40 percent stiffer than other industry materials. Touch ID is integrated into the side button, and the phone will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year.

The camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera with optical-quality 2x Telephoto, a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, and a hidden FaceTime camera beneath the inner display. Folding-specific features include Smart Take auto-capture, Duo Preview for posing via the outer display, and Duo FaceTime for shared calls. iOS 27 moves controls to the side of the screen, with Netflix, Zoom and Slack already optimized for the larger canvas.

According to CNBC, the biggest investor news may be the absence of a standard iPhone 18: analysts expect the mainline model to move to a spring launch, a split strategy intended to smooth revenue across quarters. Bank of America's Wamsi Mohan warned it risks price-sensitive consumers deferring upgrades.

The iPhone Duo arrives October 23 with the new in-house C2 modem — 50 percent faster than its predecessor at 15 percent lower energy, per Apple hardware chief Johny Srouji — further reducing reliance on Qualcomm. IDC analysts project demand could let Apple sell its entire available production and capture around 40 percent of the global foldable market by the end of next year, with China as a key battleground.
