More than 650 Regal theaters begin limited big-screen screenings of 'Heated Rivalry' Season 1 from Nov. 6-30, ahead of the 2027 second season.
The hockey romance hits the multiplex
BuzzFeed reports that more than 650 Regal Cinemas locations across the US are screening the season two episodes at a time for a limited run from November 6 through November 30, letting fans watch Ilya and Shane on the big screen with popcorn in hand.
Canada is joining in too: according to BuzzFeed, Cineplex theaters are hosting a marathon on November 8 in which all six episodes — roughly 5 hours and 22 minutes of content — play back-to-back.
Why a streaming hit is going theatrical
The surprise is that a series that set HBO Max ablaze when it premiered a year ago is returning not with a trailer or a renewal announcement, but as a movie-theater event.
YourSun reports the screenings mark the one-year anniversary of the show, based on Rachel Reid's novel, and that Regal showings will include filmed greetings from the cast and creator-writer-director Jacob Tierney.
Regal's SVP of U.S. content Brooks LeBoeuf framed it as turning a season 'fans have watched again and again into a true theatrical event,' while Sphere Abacus' Hana Palmer said the goal is letting audiences 'experience it together' on big screens.
The internet has thoughts — on both sides
BuzzFeed, which has covered the show repeatedly, rounded up a wave of fan reactions to the theatrical announcement, and the response splits sharply.
Some fans are 'over the moon' at the chance to see Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams' locker-room scenes at cinema scale, while others questioned whether a streaming series belongs in theaters at all, and a third camp simply posted jokes.
BuzzFeed's roundup quotes posts from users including @AxronM, @maybeitstrev and @jacksonxkrec among the thrilled, and @arianatorswildt and @loboyummy among the skeptics — evidence of how intensely this fandom debates every move the show makes.
What it means before Season 2
The stakes go beyond nostalgia. According to YourSun, Season 2 is currently filming in Ontario, Canada, and is slated for release in spring 2027 on Crave and HBO Max, so the theatrical run functions as a celebration and a bridge that keeps the fandom engaged during the long wait.
BuzzFeed notes the season airs on Crave in Canada, and reports Regal president Brooks LeBoeuf calling the event a chance to 'celebrate the story, its creators and its performances before Season 2 arrives in 2027.'
For a theater channel, it is a striking sign of TV-fandom events becoming genuine cinema business.
