Andy Karl to Play Scrooge in 'A Christmas Carol' at PAC NYC

Three-time Tony nominee Andy Karl will star as Ebenezer Scrooge in PAC NYC's second annual 'A Christmas Carol'.

Three-time Tony Award nominee Andy Karl — known for *Rocky*, *Groundhog Day* and *On the Twentieth Century* — will play Ebenezer Scrooge in the Perelman Performing Arts Center's second annual production of *A Christmas Carol* off Broadway. Both New York Theatre Guide and Playbill reported the casting on September 23, 2026, with Matthew Warchus directing Jack Thorne's Tony-winning adaptation of the Dickens classic. Additional casting has yet to be announced, so Karl is the production's only confirmed name for now. Further cast news is expected as the holiday season approaches.

The production has an unusually decorated pedigree. According to Playbill, Thorne's adaptation, conceived and directed by Warchus, premiered at London's Old Vic — where Warchus was artistic director — in 2017 and has played there every holiday season since, making this its tenth consecutive year on stage. A 2019 Broadway run starring LaChanze and Andrea Martin became, per Playbill, an unlikely five-time Tony winner at the pandemic-affected 2020 ceremony, sweeping the play design categories and taking Best Original Score.

Here is a wrinkle a ticket-buyer should know: the two outlets give different opening dates. Both agree on the venue — PAC NYC at 251 Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan — and on the January 3, 2027 close. New York Theatre Guide lists tickets starting at $63, a running time of two hours including a 15-minute intermission, and a recommended age of 8 and up, with bookings available through its site.

Scrooge is the pivot of the entire evening — four ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve and press him to abandon his miserly ways — so whoever wears the nightcap defines the show. This version is a musical one, built on carols like "Joy to the World," "Silent Night" and "It Came Upon the Midnight Clear," with sets and costumes by Rob Howell, music and arrangements by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker, wigs by Campbell Young and movement by Lizzi Gee, per Playbill.
