A24's Elizabeth Holmes documentary edged 'Clayface' by about $200,000 to take its first weekend at No. 1 in a historically weak Halloween frame.
What Happened: A Documentary Takes the Halloween Crown
The three-hour A24 documentary "You Can See Everything," co-directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, led a slow Halloween weekend in North America with an estimated $10.6 million, per Yahoo, narrowly beating Warner Bros.' DC villain origin story "Clayface" at $10.4 million.
According to ABC News, the margin was just $200,684, and the film earned that figure from 2,655 locations in its third weekend — the first time it has reached No. 1.
Why It Is Surprising: A Jailed Fraudster Beats a Superhero
A documentary about a jailed biotech fraudster topping a Batman movie on Halloween is not the outcome distributors projected.
The Express Tribune notes the race was framed as an unusual one, since horror films typically benefit from the holiday, and Black Bear's romcom "Wicker" and Laika's "Wildwood" were expected to be the alternatives.
IGN reports the doc originally opened to just 855 theaters on October 16 and has been carried by word-of-mouth and strong reviews, with Letterboxd users making it that platform's highest-rated feature film ever.
The Evidence: Numbers, Budgets and Holding Power
The weekend's totals tell the story. ABC News reports "You Can See Everything" has made $63.9 million to date against a reported $7 million production budget, while "Clayface" fell 57% in its second weekend, reaching $44.1 million domestic against a reported $44 million budget.
IGN says the doc dropped just 43% domestically and now holds $64 million, while Clayface's global total stands at $82.9 million — with Clayface first globally at $22.8 million for the weekend because of the doc's limited international rollout.
The Stakes: Awards Buzz and a Weak Holiday Frame
Yahoo reports the documentary follows Elizabeth Holmes and her family for a month before she began an 11-year prison sentence in 2023, and has even entered the best picture Oscar conversation, with Amanda Seyfried's surprise cameo drawing awards chatter of its own.
The weekend itself was historically soft: analyst David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research told Yahoo that last Halloween had the same trouble and this one looks weaker, blaming costumes, candy and trick-or-treating.
Overall ticket sales are unlikely to surpass $63 million, ABC News reports, which would make it the third-lowest-earning weekend of the year.
What Comes Next: Final Tallies and a Crowded November
Media Play News reports final tallies will be available on November 2, and IGN cautions the positions could change once final totals are counted.
Meanwhile, IGN notes the calendar ahead includes "Godzilla Minus Zero" on November 6, the Dune re-releases on November 13, "The Hunger Games" prequel "Sunrise on the Reaping" on November 20, and "Focker In-Law" on November 25.
The Rest of the Chart: Laika's Fandom and a Wicker Husband
Laika's stop-motion "Wildwood" held third with $7.5 million, per Yahoo, despite a reported $100 million budget that IGN says it is still trying to overcome.
Fathom told Media Play News that combined Friday and Saturday PostTrak polling showed 97% of general audiences rating it "Excellent" or "Very Good."
Olivia Colman's "Wicker," in which Alexander Skarsgård plays a fantastical wicker husband, took fourth at $4.1 million, with "Street Fighter" fifth at $3.2 million, according to Yahoo.
