Jake Bates hit a 22-yard field goal as time expired to lift Detroit past Green Bay 20-17 after rookie Trey Smack missed two kicks.

What Happened: Detroit Wins It at the Buzzer

The Lions beat the Packers 20-17 at Ford Field on Sunday when Jake Bates made a 22-yard field goal as time expired. Detroit improved to 4-2 while Green Bay fell to 4-3, ending a three-game winning streak.

Bates stayed perfect on field goals this season, per the team's recap. Jared Goff went 22-of-32 for 303 yards and two touchdowns, with Jameson Williams scoring both (16 and 10 yards) and Amon-Ra St. Brown catching nine passes for 153 yards.

Jordan Love was 27-of-45 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Green Bay.

Why It's Surprising: Two Kicks Decide It

Rookie Packers kicker Trey Smack became the first kicker to miss two field goals from 35 yards or closer in the same game since 2019, according to Sportradar via ESPN. He was wide right from 26 yards in the first half and missed a 35-yarder late after D.J.

Wonnum got a finger on the ball — one play after Josh Jacobs dropped a potential touchdown pass in the end zone. "We had some premier field position and we just didn't take advantage," Packers coach Matt LaFleur said.

The Evidence: Penalties and Bold Calls Shaped It

Penalties gave Detroit five first downs, its most from penalties since 2020, per ESPN. Green Bay safety Xavier McKinney said he was "not a fan of the refs right now."

Both coaches gambled on fourth down and lost: Dan Campbell went for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 24, and Jahmyr Gibbs was stopped; Matt LaFleur passed on a field goal while trailing in the second quarter, and Love's fourth-and-4 pass from the Detroit 7 fell incomplete.

Brian Branch, back from a torn Achilles, intercepted Love in the fourth quarter in his first game since December.

The Stakes: Brutal NFC North Race

The win puts Detroit in third place in the NFC North behind Minnesota (6-0) and Chicago (5-2), while the Packers dropped to last in a division where all four teams have winning records. "Any division game is important. We need these. They're mini-playoff games," Branch said.

The Lions' two straight wins are their first of the season, and Goff made NFL history as the first quarterback with at least 14 touchdown passes and no interceptions through his team's first six games, per the Lions' PR department via Yahoo Sports.

What Comes Next: Vikings Come to Town

Detroit hosts the undefeated Vikings next Sunday, a chance to string together division wins and climb the NFC North. Green Bay plays quickly, hosting Carolina on Thursday night, with LaFleur saying he would not expect injured centers Sean Rhyan (ankle) or Jacob Monk (quad) to play.

The Packers lost both centers during the game, forcing second-year lineman John Williams into his first career offensive snap. Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw left with an ankle injury to monitor.

Goff's Historic Night

Goff extended his streak of consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 29, per the Lions' official recap, and finished with a 119.7 passer rating.

Yahoo Sports reports he is the first quarterback in NFL history with at least 14 touchdown passes without an interception through six games, topping the previous mark of 10 set by Steve Young in 1987.

The one caveat: he was charged with a lost fumble on a botched snap with center Cade Mays, so the no-turnovers claim needs that qualification.
