Ethan Grunkemeyer's 5-yard TD pass to Luke Reynolds with 1:44 left lifted Virginia Tech past Clemson 20-16, its first win over the Tigers since 2007.

What happened: a walk-off drive in Death Valley

Trailing 16-13, Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer led an 11-play, 69-yard scoring drive that he capped with a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Luke Reynolds with 1:44 left, giving the Hokies a 20-16 come-from-behind win at Clemson on Saturday night.

The drive was aided by two Clemson pass interference penalties and a late hit out of bounds that produced three first downs. Grunkemeyer finished 20 of 32 for 156 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, and both of his scoring throws went to Reynolds.

Why it's surprising: a 19-year drought broken

The upset carries extra weight because Virginia Tech had not beaten Clemson since 2007, making this the Hokies' first win over the Tigers in nearly two decades. It is also the second straight victory for James Franklin's first-year team, which followed last week's 34-24 win over Georgia Tech.

Clemson dominated the third quarter, outgaining Virginia Tech 146-13 and reeling off 13 straight points, yet the Hokies scored the game's final 10 points to steal it on the road.

How the game unfolded

Much of the first half was a defensive stalemate with the teams trading field goals. Virginia Tech closed the half with a 17-play, 87-yard drive — converting a fourth-and-1 on a quarterback sneak — that ended with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Luke Reynolds and a 10-3 halftime lead.

Clemson then overwhelmed the third quarter with two Nolan Hauser field goals and Tait Reynolds' 16-yard go-ahead touchdown run off a quarterback draw. John Love's 47-yard field goal early in the fourth cut it to 16-13 before the winning drive.

The evidence: Clemson's final chance dies on replay

The Tigers still had a chance to win on their final possession, but Tait Reynolds' 26-yard third-down completion to Bryant Wesco Jr. along the left sideline was overturned on replay because the receiver did not stay inbounds.

On the following play, fourth-and-9 with 48 seconds left, Mylachi Williams sacked Reynolds to seal the Hokies' win. Virginia Tech's defense finished with 13 tackles for loss, per The Sports Animal, including two each from Kaleb Spencer and Noah Chambers.

Swinney points the finger at his own staff

According to Yahoo Sports, Dabo Swinney gave a blunt halftime assessment when Clemson trailed 10-3 with just 94 total yards: "It's all coaching... That's 100% coaching. That ain't the players, that's us."

The Associated Press reports the Tigers lack explosiveness offensively, with talented receivers T.J. Moore and Bryant Wesco Jr. grossly underutilized behind a freshman quarterback and a struggling offensive line.

Virginia Tech, meanwhile, was held to 70 rushing yards on 37 carries.

The stakes and what comes next

The loss deals a serious blow to Clemson's hopes of returning to the ACC championship game, a contest the program once dominated. Miami is unbeaten at 5-0 in conference play, followed by Wake Forest and SMU at 4-1, while the Tigers fell to 2-2 in the ACC and 4-3 overall.

Virginia Tech improved to 6-2 and 3-2 and visits SMU on Friday; Clemson travels to Florida State next Saturday.
