Outlets frame the Giants' overtime win over the Texans as pure drama, from Harbaugh's hymn of a press conference to Skattebo's game-defining run.
A Press Conference That Opens Like a Soliloquy
Fox News' OutKick reports that Giants coach John Harbaugh opened his postgame news conference not with X's and O's but with a credo: "First of all, I just want to humbly say, just personally, very grateful to my Lord, High Rock, Protector and Stronghold, the Lord God in heaven."
He then handed the win to his cast — "that was a player's win," he said, crediting quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Cam Skattebo.
For a theatergoer, the scene reads less like analysis than curtain call: a coach benched his lead the week before, then framed his return as redemption. Harbaugh also told reporters Skattebo played with a "fierce joy," language straight out of a character study.
The Defining Run: A Penalty for Too Much Commitment
The production's centerpiece, as Fox News describes it, came early: Skattebo took a handoff, lowered his head and ran straight through Texans safety M.J. Stewart — and was flagged 15 yards for unnecessary roughness because he lowered his head before contact.
Fox News notes the flag would have been "foreign and appalling" to Larry Csonka, Jim Brown and Earl Campbell, casting the moment as an old-school stage bit colliding with modern house rules.
Skattebo was not finished: he scored a 16-yard run and, in overtime, ripped off a 42-yard burst that set the Giants up at the Houston 28-yard line before Devin Singletary ran in for the winning touchdown.
The Understudy's Night: McCarthy's Clean First Start
Yahoo Sports reports that McCarthy, making his first Giants start, completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards with no touchdowns — and, crucially, no interceptions or fumbles. Both outlets agree he kept it clean and efficient.
Fox News adds the plot twist: McCarthy was traded from the Minnesota Vikings just 27 days ago and was named the starter only on Wednesday, succeeding Jameis Winston, who had replaced the injured Jaxson Dart. "I thought he did a great job," Harbaugh said, per Fox News.
"He sure didn't play perfect but he played a heck of a football game. He deserves a lot of credit."
An Injury Scare, a Slide, and a Bye-Week Intermission
Yahoo Sports reports the drama nearly lost its hero in the final act: after his 42-yard overtime run, Skattebo slid down at the 30-yard line when he could have gained more, saying he "felt something" in the back of his hamstring and wanted to avoid injury on the play that set up Singletary's 30-yard winning sprint.
Yahoo Sports notes Skattebo returned from being held without a carry in Week 6 against the Saints to rush 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown, averaging 7.3 yards per carry.
The Giants now head into a bye week before traveling to Philadelphia in Week 9, and Fox News quotes Harbaugh's closing promise: "We're going to be in it until the end now."
