Architect Peter Marino, designer of Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton flagships, will be the CFDA's 2026 Fashion Icon.

An Architect Takes Fashion's Highest Honor

Per the CFDA's announcement, Marino founded his eponymous New York firm in 1978 and has spent roughly four decades designing immersive boutiques and flagships for Armani, Bulgari, Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co. and Zegna, plus memorable spaces for Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Barneys New York.

The Times of India reports that recent projects include Dior flagships in Milan, Beverly Hills and New York, Chanel buildings in San Diego and Los Angeles, and Tiffany & Co. flagships in Milan and New York.

He will receive the honor at the 2026 CFDA Fashion Awards, presented by Amazon Fashion, on Monday, November 2 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, with Cornelia Guest presenting.

Why a Store Designer, Not a Designer?

As The Times of India observes, fashion icons are usually designers, models or celebrities — but Marino made his mark differently, shaping how people experience luxury brands rather than the clothes themselves.

Both outlets note his signature personal style: head-to-toe black leather, biker boots and dark sunglasses, an outfit he has made unmistakably his own.

According to the CFDA, chairman Thom Browne said that through his vision, Peter 'has transformed architecture into an expression of fashion,' adding that 'Peter has never followed convention. He has always defined his own.'

The Times of India frames the award as recognizing both his buildings and the individuality that made him a fixture of the fashion world.

The Evidence: A Career Beyond the Runway

Corroborated across both sources, Marino's credentials extend well past fashion: he founded the Peter Marino Art Foundation in Southampton, New York in 2021, showcasing more than 500 works spanning antiquity to the present, and he often incorporates site-specific art commissions into his store designs.

The French Ministry of Culture named him a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2012 and an Officier in 2017, and in 2024 he received the World Monuments Fund's Hadrian Award.

According to the CFDA, Marino said it was 'great to be named a Fashion Icon' and to be recognized by the industry he has worked alongside for 40 years.

What Comes Next for the Icon

The ceremony, per the CFDA, will feature Google Shopping backing the American Emerging Designer of the Year award, M·A·C Cosmetics as official beauty partner and Krug as official champagne partner, while WYouth and Nuuly will host a student viewing section for CFDA scholars and fashion students.

For devoted fashion readers, the stakes are interpretive: The Times of India suggests Marino's selection says something about how the industry now defines influence — sometimes not through a collection or a runway moment, but through the spaces where fashion comes to life.

With the CFDA now naming him an icon, that influence is getting attention well beyond the boutiques that first made his name.
