Duncan Sheik Dies at 56 as 'Spring Awakening' Revival Looms

The Tony- and Grammy-winning composer of 'Spring Awakening' died Thursday night at 56, weeks before an Off-Broadway revival of his musical begins performances.

The post said the "father, husband, son, brother, and friend" died "surrounded by love," days after his family had shared that he was in critical but stable condition while receiving medical care. Independent Mail reports that his mother, Suzanne Sheik, told The New York Times the cause was cardiac arrest and organ failure.

Sheik first broke through with his 1996 self-titled debut album and its Grammy-nominated hit "Barely Breathing," which ABC7 reports peaked at No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 and, per Fox23 Maine, spent 55 weeks on that chart. He then pivoted to the stage, telling Broadcast Music, Inc. in 2015 that he had not been "a huge fan" of Broadway music and wanted to write for an audience "beyond the normal crowd that would go to a Broadway musical." Fox23 Maine quotes his 2007 Associated Press remark: "With the exception of our director, we are all kind of Broadway outsiders... We wanted to shake things up a bit."

Teaming with lyricist Steven Sater, Sheik composed the music for "Spring Awakening," the rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind's 1891 play that opened on Broadway in 2006 starring Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher. Multiple outlets in the pack agree the show won eight Tony Awards in 2007, including best musical, with Sheik taking best original score and best orchestrations — Independent Mail adds that the cast recording later won the Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. ABC7 reports Sheik went on to compose for "American Psycho," "Because of Winn-Dixie," "Alice by Heart" and "The Secret Life of Bees."

The show that made Sheik's name was actively being reassembled in New York as news broke that its composer was gone. The pack's coverage also surfaced an unexpected biographical thread — Yahoo reports Sheik grew up on Hilton Head Island, bought his first electric guitar there, and in 2025 visited Bluffton's May River Theatre during its production of the show.

Two Sheik projects were still alive in the pipeline, according to the pack. ABC7 reports that in May it was announced his new musical "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen," based on Moyoco Anno's manga, would make its Off-Broadway debut this fall, with Sheik saying he was "a bit flummoxed" about scoring a famous manga but "excited to help put this work in front of an audience." Meanwhile, TicketNews reports the revival begins performances November 27 at Studio Seaview with an official opening December 17, featuring Sheik's music and Sater's book and lyrics, with Or Matias as music supervisor and Cynthia Meng as music director.

The family's Instagram statement, quoted by ABC7, called Sheik "a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater" whose artistry "leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape," adding that his "musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come." Independent Mail reports Sheik was married to Nora Ariffin and had a 7-year-old daughter, Ines. For the theater community, the immediate question is how the December-opening revival — and the fall debut of "Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen" — will proceed as a living testament to a composer who told the Associated Press in 2016, per Fox23 Maine, that it had become his project to "drag different people" who might not normally attend musicals into the theater.
