Turnstile became the first hardcore band to play SNL since Fear's chaotic 1981 set, with host Dakota Johnson promising a wall of death.

What Happened

The episode aired live at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, with the band — Brendan Yates, Franz Lyons, Pat McCrory, Daniel Fang and Meg Mills — making their SNL debut. In the run of promos released beforehand, Johnson stared down the camera and insisted she would 'form a wall of death' to celebrate the performance, while comedian Ben Marshall declined because, per the bit, his doctor said he's 'not allowed to mosh.' Marshall reportedly tips over too easily, a center-of-gravity problem the promo compared to Ikea lamps.

Why It's Surprising

The genuinely historic part, as Billboard frames it, is that Turnstile is the first hardcore band to appear on SNL since Fear's famously chaotic performance back in 1981 — a 45-year gap. Billboard notes Johnson leaned into that history in the promo, remarking that Fear 'completely trashed the set,' 'threw stuff around and said things you cannot say on TV,' before asking the sheepish-looking bandmates whether they planned to do the same. For devoted comedy and hardcore fans alike, a two-time Grammy-winning hardcore act on a mainstream sketch stage is the kind of booking nobody expected to see again after the Fear incident.

The Evidence

Billboard's report details the promo's strangest gag: Marshall handing out awkward hugs to the rockers, then the bandmates answering a question in perfect unison, prompting Johnson to ask, 'Wow, do you guys always speak in unison like that? Because that would be weird.' The band's credentials are real, per Billboard: at the 68th Grammy Awards in February 2026, Turnstile converted two of four nominations, winning best rock album for 'Never Enough' and best metal performance for the track 'Birds.' Page Six adds that Johnson is hosting for a third time — after 2015 and a January 2024 'Madame Web' stint — and becomes just the sixth host in SNL history to appear on her birthday, which falls on Oct. 4.

The Stakes

Page Six reports the cast expanded by five last season but adds only two new hires this year — featured players Saidah Belo-Osagie, Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Kam Patterson and Grace Reiter are among the names joining veterans like Michael Che, Colin Jost and Kenan Thompson — so a hardcore band with fresh Grammy momentum is a statement. Yahoo's Billboard-syndicated guide speculates Johnson's hosting could draw cameos from 'Verity' co-stars like Anne Hathaway and Josh Hartnett, raising the show's visibility even further.

What Comes Next

The season rolls on quickly, per Page Six's schedule: Shane Gillis hosts Oct. 10 with Rosalía, Inde Navarrette takes Halloween with Gracie Abrams, and hosts remain TBA for Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and the December stretch through Dec. 19. For Turnstile, the SNL debut caps a run that Billboard says includes co-starring adjacency to Johnson's own busy season — she also appeared in Taylor Swift's 'Patient Zero' video with Colin Farrell. Full episodes land on Peacock Sunday mornings, so the wall-of-death question — and whether anything got trashed — should be answered by morning after.
