Channel 4 has canceled 'Married at First Sight UK' after rape allegations and two reviews, shelving season 6 and redirecting its budget to new shows.

The Cancellation and What Won't Air

Channel 4 confirmed on November 5 that 'Married at First Sight UK' is canceled following sexual assault allegations, Variety reports.

Season 6, which had already been filmed, will not be broadcast, and the spin-off 'Second Married at First Sight' — in pre-production with summer casting planned — has also been scrapped.

Previous UK seasons have been removed from Channel 4's streaming platforms, though international versions like the U.S., Australian and New Zealand shows remain available. Producer CPL said it understands the decision.

Why It's Surprising: Reviews Cleared the Network

The twist, per Deadline, is that one review concluded it would be 'reasonable to continue producing future series,' and the Clyde & Co review made no finding that Channel 4 breached the Ofcom Code or that the format is inherently unsafe.

CEO Priya Dogra instead judged that wholesale implementation of the welfare recommendations would fundamentally change a show she says 'has now run its course over ten years.'

Deadline notes the recommendations included 24/7 recording, CCTV in apartments, separate bedrooms on wedding nights, safe words, panic buttons and lockable ensuite bathrooms.

The Allegations That Prompted the Reviews

Earlier this year, a BBC 'Panorama' investigation alleged three instances of sexual assault during the UK series, with two women alleging rape by partners they met on the show and a third alleging a non-consensual sex act.

All three men accused have denied the allegations, and one was arrested on suspicion of rape over the summer, Deadline reports.

Yahoo Entertainment adds that only Shona Manderson was named in the BBC program, and that Channel 4 removed episodes and social channels after the allegations became public.

What the Reviews Actually Found

Deadline details that Clyde & Co examined more than 30,000 documents, 20 hours of footage and conducted 15 interviews, finding a small number of instances where protocols were not fully applied — contributors breaking rules around 'prohibited substances' received first-and-final warnings rather than removal.

Lorraine Heggessey's review suggested separate bedrooms with an option to opt in to sharing, reduced couples per series, and in-person psychological testing considering misogyny and consent attitudes.

She also found Channel 4's involvement had 'at times led to a lack of objective scrutiny over some production decisions.'

The Stakes for Reality TV Duty of Care

The Culture, Media and Sport committee will hold an evidence session on Channel 4 on November 17.

Committee chair Caroline Dinenage said the cancellation 'makes sense' and that 'reality TV contestants have often been treated as a commodity, with duty of care a slogan rather than a genuine principle,' per Variety.

What Comes Next: Budget Redirected

Dogra said the show's considerable budget will be reinvested in finding 'the next generation of distinctive and disruptive British television,' with incoming programs chief David Brindley, who starts in January, overseeing it, Deadline reports.

Deadline also notes this is at least the third set of external reviews Channel 4 has launched over the past decade, following reviews into the death of true crime producer John Balson and the conduct of 'Escape to the Chateau' hosts Dick and Angel Strawbridge.

Meanwhile, the MAFS format — which originated in Denmark 13 years ago — remains a hit in Australia and the U.S.
