Kering has appointed Martine Rose as Balenciaga's creative director from November 16, 2026, one day after Pierpaolo Piccioli's abrupt exit.
A London Subculture Designer Takes the Helm
Based in Paris, Rose takes up the role on November 16, 2026, bringing what the group calls 'a deep understanding of the House's creative identity to her own singular vision of contemporary culture.'
In a statement, Rose called the appointment 'a true privilege,' saying Balenciaga has been 'shaped by remarkable creative talents before me' and that she looks 'forward to creating the next chapter in this rich and beautiful story.'
Why the Pick Turns the Industry Narrative
The appointment is striking on several fronts. Piccioli lasted only about 16 months after arriving from Valentino, and Wallpaper* notes he is the latest in a rapid churn of creative exits at Kering houses.
Rose, meanwhile, is a rare Black woman leading a major luxury house — Wallpaper* draws the line to Grace Wales Bonner's appointment as Hermès menswear artistic director — and both designers came through the talent incubator Fashion East.
Wallpaper* reports Rose is known for street-cast runway shows at unexpected venues, from a residential street in north London to a former Vauxhall cruising club, a disruptive sensibility it expects her to carry into Paris.
The Evidence: Rose's Balenciaga History
She founded her own label in 2007, sold a majority stake to Tomorrow Ltd in 2021, and has done capsules for Supreme, Nike, Napapijri and Tommy Hilfiger, plus a guest creative director stint at Clarks in 2023.
Her laid-back, gender-fluid look has won fans WWD names including Drake, Naomi Campbell, Kendrick Lamar and Timothée Chalamet. Kering's Luca de Meo calls her vision 'fresh, fearless and deeply contemporary.'
The Stakes for Kering and for Rose
The move lands at a precarious moment for both sides. WWD frames Piccioli as the third creative director to exit Kering in under a month, in a wave that also includes Seán McGirr's departure from Alexander McQueen.
For Rose, the house job offers a timely platform: WWD reports she had to pause her fall 2026 collection while disentangling her namesake company from the troubled shareholder Tomorrow, later sold to The Level Group, leaving that hot pink fur and dark denim collection unproduced.
Wallpaper* quotes her 2024 question to the magazine — whether fashion can stay 'dynamic, interesting and relevant' in a saturated, product-led landscape — as the spirit she brings.
What Comes Next
Rose starts in Paris on November 16, 2026, so attention turns quickly to how her subculture-rooted language — Kering's release cites music, identity and 'the social codes of dress' — translates into a house founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1917 and famous for radical form.
Balenciaga CEO Gianfranco Gianangeli says her ability to 'reinvent silhouettes' matches the house's spirit of innovation, and Kering frames the appointment as a bid to keep Balenciaga 'at the forefront of innovation, creativity and culture.'
