The Man Without Fear is heading into one last battle. Multiple outlets report that the forthcoming third season of Daredevil: Born Again will be its last, ending Charlie Cox's run as Matt Murdock on Disney+ after three seasons. The decision comes about two months after the Marvel Studios show wrapped filming on its third season, which is expected to premiere in 2027. TheWrap notes the final season will see Cox joined by Krysten Ritter, Mike Colter and Finn Jones, reprising Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist from Marvel's Netflix shows and The Defenders, giving the street-level corner of the MCU a full Defenders reunion on the way out.

The most eyebrow-raising detail, per The Hollywood Reporter, is that Marvel has quietly parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane, whose contract was up and was not renewed. The Hollywood Reporter reports the split means Scardapane is exiting in the middle of post-production, and it is unclear who will see the show through to completion, though one source said post-production is in its final stages. Marvel had no comment. IGN observes that the departure left the series without a clear leader to finish it, a notably messy way to close out a show that fans had widely praised as a return to form.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's account of the show's history, Born Again was greenlit in July 2022 for an 18-episode season with Matt Corman and Chris Ord as head writers. Production stopped during the 2023 strikes, at which point Marvel did a creative reset: Corman and Ord were let go and Scardapane, a writer and executive producer on Netflix's Punisher, came aboard as showrunner, with Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead joining as directors. The order was split into two seasons totaling 17 episodes — nine for season one and eight for season two.

IGN frames the news as eerie déjà vu for devotees: the original Daredevil ran three acclaimed seasons on Netflix from 2015-18 before being pulled, with a fourth season expected but derailed as Disney launched its own streamer. Now, IGN writes, the Man Without Fear has again had his TV time cut short at the third season. The outlet notes the revival was not a ratings smash but was hailed as a success by critics and fans, especially compared to other Marvel shows, and that it is unclear whether this is a cancellation or simply the end of this story.

The Hollywood Reporter places the ending inside a broader pullback, reporting that Marvel Television has slowly been shaving off the shows it produces for Disney+. Its latest, VisionQuest, the final WandaVision trilogy installment starring Paul Bettany, debuts in October. THR also notes Disney+ un-renewed Wonder Man after initially picking up a second season, echoing IGN's report that Wonder Man was canceled earlier this summer despite its greenlit second season. The final Born Again season is due in 2027, and THR says nothing is seemingly on the books after that.

Even as one flagship ends, outlets say the pipeline is not empty. The Hollywood Reporter reports Marvel continually has three to five live-action shows in development and has just greenlit a spy thriller referred to as Zodiac, a title THR links to a comic criminal organization headed by the villain Scorpio that battled S.H.I.E.L.D. IGN adds that fans still hope Daredevil crosses into film after his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially with Spidey embracing street-level battles. For now, the Defenders-reunion final season stands as the character's last confirmed screen chapter.
