Judi Dench revealed on BBC Radio 4 that macular degeneration has left her unable to act on stage or film — though she still refuses to retire.

A Heartbreaking Admission on Radio 4

Dame Judi Dench told BBC Radio 4's "Today" program on Thursday, October 22 that her deteriorating eyesight has ended her acting career. "I can't be on stage. I can't do a play anymore. I can't do a film anymore. I can't read anymore," the 91-year-old Oscar winner said.

On ageing itself, she was blunt — "rubbish," she called it, saying there is "nothing to say for it at all" beyond advice to "don't think about it too much and just keep on trying."

The admission is striking coming from a performer who won an Academy Award for "Shakespeare in Love" and earned eight Oscar nominations across a career spanning stage and screen.

How Vision Loss Reshapes Daily Life

Dench described social situations that have become treacherous. She told interviewer Emma Barnett she could not see her "face at all," admitting, "I go up to lots of the wrong people and give them an almost hug and say, 'Oh sorry, didn't realize.'"

Even nature has gone dark: "They said this summer was absolutely sensational with bluebells; I couldn't see one." She noted she still knows what her trees look like — partly from memory.

"I have to put up with it," she said, adding that radio "has always been important" to her now that she can no longer use her eyes to read or perform.

A Decade-Long Battle, a Family Echo

The update comes 14 years after Dench's 2012 diagnosis with age-related macular degeneration, a condition that damages the macula, the retinal region responsible for central vision, and which also affected her mother, Eleanora Olave Dench.

In July 2023 she called it "the most terrible shock to the system" and "terrible to be so dependent on people," per reports cited by Page Six and Yahoo.

In November 2025, appearing on ITV alongside Ian McKellen, she said she can see his outline but "can't recognize anybody anymore," and that she cannot attend events alone or she would "walk into something."

Weeks After Denouncing Retirement Talk

The disclosure lands just weeks after Dench furiously rejected retirement rumors. In an Oct.

9 Times interview she snapped: "Isn't it about time you put your feet up? No, it bloody well isn't."

She said she wants to "banish" the words "retire," "vintage" and "old," and expressed admiration for actor Newton Blick, "who died in his dressing room after a performance," adding, "I want to be one of those women who throw themselves out of planes when they're 100."

The contrast between her refusal to stop and her admission that she can no longer work is what makes this week's revelation so affecting for fans.

Adapting, and Still Working

According to the Daily Mail, Dench has been using £300 RayBan Meta glasses, suggested by vision loss charity Sight for Surrey, which convert text to speech through a private audio feed.

The Daily Mail also reports she is promoting a new memoir, "Is It Too Late To Make A Run For It?," and plans a return to the stage hosting evenings with writing partner Brendan O'Hea.

Per Entertainment Weekly via AOL, her voice continues in projects including the 2026 fantasy film "The Magic Faraway Tree" and Disney World's Spaceship Earth narration at Epcot — work that does not depend on her sight.

What Comes Next for a Legend

Dench's last film appearance was a 2022 cameo, the Daily Mail notes, but her recent screen work has lessened as AMD progressed — she last earned an Oscar nod for 2021's "Belfast." Her memoir tour and continuing voice work suggest she intends to keep performing in whatever form her sight allows.

For a star who blasted trigger warnings in theatres as "mollycoddling" in the same memoir and called the 2019 "Cats" film "a complete catastrophe," the pattern is consistent: she adapts, she complains, and she refuses to be written off — even now.
