Spanish second-division striker Jesús de Miguel died at 30 after an on-pitch collision with Andorra's goalkeeper.

What Happened in Tenerife

Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died Tuesday morning at 07:00 GMT, a day after suffering head and chest injuries in a collision during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra.

The 30-year-old was chasing a long ball near the halfway line in stoppage time of a 2-2 draw when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono, who had come far out of his goal, crashed into him at speed while attempting a clearance.

De Miguel went down holding his chest, lay motionless on the pitch, and players from both sides were visibly devastated as the match was abandoned. He was taken to hospital, where the club initially described him as stable despite the severity of his condition, but his condition declined overnight.

A Career Built on Grit

De Miguel's path ran through Spain's lower leagues. His most productive season came at Castellón in 2023, when 16 goals helped earn promotion to the second division.

After joining Tenerife in the summer of 2025, he scored 11 goals that season — six in his first five games — helping the Canary Islands club win another promotion.

Known to fans simply as 'Demi,' the 6-foot-2, left-footed striker made his living competing for balls in the air, and Fox News reports he is survived by a daughter born last year.

Investigation Into the Collision

Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, as Spanish law requires a judicial inquiry into any non-natural death.

Referee officials showed Owono a straight red card for the challenge before abandoning the match, and the goalkeeper — who had over 30,000 Instagram followers — deactivated his account by Tuesday morning.

But the inquiry may not lead to charges: Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told the Spanish agency EFE that criminal proceedings appeared 'very unlikely' because the collision occurred during play, though authorities must first review the referee's report and the sports disciplinary committee's findings.

CNN notes the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands confirmed any non-natural death requires investigation.

Football Rallies Around Tenerife

The football world responded with a wave of tributes.

Tenerife announced six official days of mourning, suspending all club activities, and will open its Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López on Saturday evening for supporters to bid farewell; mourners have already laid flowers beneath a black-and-white portrait of the striker.

Spain's federation suspended all Copa del Rey games on Tuesday, and UEFA scheduled moments of silence before every Champions League, Europa League and Conference League match this week, including Barcelona's win over Aston Villa.

Real Madrid planned a minute of silence at training, while Messi, Ronaldo, Nadal, Piqué and Mikel Arteta all published messages. Andorra postponed its Sunday match, saying it must 'stand together, support each other, and take care of one another.'

What Comes Next

De Miguel's body will be transported to Navahermosa in the Toledo province at his family's request, with his teammates and club officials attending the funeral and a 'final farewell,' per Fox News.

Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres said the club must 'give Demi the tribute he deserves,' while the family asked for privacy. The judicial inquiry will proceed through the referee's report and disciplinary findings, though the chief prosecutor has signaled criminal charges are improbable.

José Mourinho, speaking as Real Madrid manager, called it a 'very, very difficult moment' for Owono as well, underlining that the football community faces mourning on both sides of the incident. The Segunda División match itself will not be replayed as a completed fixture after its abandonment.
