Tom Hanks returns to Broadway for the first time since 2013, starring with Kelli O'Hara in "This World of Tomorrow" in fall 2027.
Hanks Announces His First Broadway Role in 14 Years
Tom Hanks is headed back to Broadway. Newsday reports the two-time Oscar winner will star alongside Tony Award winner Kelli O'Hara in "This World of Tomorrow," a new play adapted from short stories by Hanks, set to open next fall.
Deseret News notes it will be Hanks' first Broadway appearance in 14 years, following his Tony-nominated turn in Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" in 2013, where he played tabloid columnist Mike McAlary.
The two leads already proved their pairing Off-Broadway, starring together in the play's sold-out eight-week run at The Shed last year.
A Time-Travel Romance Built From Hanks' Own Stories
The play is a "time-travel romance" based on short stories from Hanks' 2017 collection "Uncommon Type," which he adapted for the stage with playwright James Glossman, according to Deseret News.
Hanks plays Bert Allenberry, a tech entrepreneur living at the end of the 21st century who travels back, again and again, to June 8, 1939 at the New York World's Fair, where he meets Carmen, played by O'Hara.
Per the synopsis cited by Deadline, Bert discovers "the future is shaped not by technology, but by the choices we make for love."
What Hanks Says About Being in the Right Place at the Right Time
Hanks told Playbill last year, as quoted by Deseret News, that the play's fascination lies in how "things only happen when you're in the right place at the right time, and you have no idea if you are in the right place or if the time is right to be there — history just sort of decides that for you."
He admitted to Stephen Colbert in November 2025 that performing work he helped write felt different, joking that "they are gonna have a real hard time firing me if I screw up."
Kenny Leon Returns, and O'Hara Brings Her Own Star Power
Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon, who directed the play at The Shed, will return for the Broadway production, and Deseret News quotes his statement: "There's no time like the present to further explore this story of love and time travel from Glossman and Hanks. More than anything, I look forward to even more audiences who will have the chance to witness the onstage chemistry of Kelli O'Hara and Tom Hanks."
O'Hara has been a Broadway mainstay since her 1997 debut in "Jekyll & Hyde," with nine Tony nominations and a 2015 win for "The King and I," per Newsday.
The Stakes: A Limited Run and a Theater Yet to Be Named
Deseret News, citing The New York Times, reports the play will open in fall 2027 for a limited run, though official dates and the Shubert Theatre hosting it have not been announced — Newsday notes only that it will be a Shubert theatre yet to be named, with additional cast to be revealed later.
newyorktheater.me's Jonathan Mandell, reviewing The Shed run, called the quaint time-traveling play unremarkable but noted Hanks stars as Bert Allenberry opposite O'Hara's Carmen Perry.
For theatergoers, the surprise is scale: a movie superstar returning to write and headline Broadway on his own terms.
