Quentin Tarantino will make his playwriting and directing debut with 'The Popinjay Cavalier,' starring Sacha Baron Cohen at Phoenix Theatre in 2027.

A filmmaker trades the camera for the stage

Quentin Tarantino is making his debut as a stage playwright and director with 'The Popinjay Cavalier,' a swashbuckling comedy opening in London's West End in 2027, as reported by That Eric Alper.

Sacha Baron Cohen, making his own West End debut, will star as Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr. Previews begin February 23 at the Phoenix Theatre, with official opening night set for March 18, and the production is currently booking through June 13, 2027.

British GQ notes the title refers to archaic lingo for a vain, arrogant gentleman — a fitting label for the rakish lead.

Why the pairing turns heads

This is a first on two fronts: Tarantino has never written and directed a stage play before, and Baron Cohen has never appeared in the West End, according to That Eric Alper.

British GQ frames the collaboration as the biggest plot twist yet in a strange run for the director, who has spent the seven years since 'Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood' releasing an animated Kill Bill spin-off via Epic Games, returning to acting in 'Only What We Carry,' and writing 'The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.'

GQ also notes Tarantino has suggested the play could become his tenth and final film after its stage run — a detail that raises the stakes for both creators.

The story and the spectacle

Set in Europe during the 1830s, the play follows Rupert Sebastian Thomas Jr., billed in the pack as the greatest actor in the world, who offends the French en route to the Comédie-Française and sails back to England through treacherous swordplay.

That Eric Alper describes a story of disguises, deception, sword fighting and acrobatics, while British GQ cites producer Sonia Friedman calling it 'a big nod to the 1930s movies like Zorro.'

Fight director Philip d'Orleans and action coordinator Sam Lyon-Behan will oversee live physical sequences, with scenic and costume design by Tom Pye, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound by Ian Dickinson and music by Tim Phillips, per That Eric Alper.

What comes next

Producers Sonia Friedman and Tom Rothman say Tarantino has been developing the play in rehearsals alongside actors, fencers, acrobats and musicians, per That Eric Alper.

Further casting announcements are expected, with only Baron Cohen confirmed so far, according to British GQ, which also notes the role is a major test given GQ's view of Baron Cohen's recent setbacks.

Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions are presenting the production at the Phoenix Theatre.
